Delta Dental Redesign

The Delta Dental Insurance Company  joined with San Francisco's State University DES 627 Advanced Projects in Visual Communication Design Spring 2022 to mentor and collaborate with the class to teach the students more about user experience.

The Challenge

How might we redesign the Provider Search Experience [so patients can find the right Dentist for their needs]?

The Solution

In this web redesign, dentists will be presented as unique individuals, showcasing their specialties and personal approach to dental care through personalized cards. The search process will be streamlined with advanced filtering options for users to find dentists based on location, specialty, and patient ratings. Maps will visually display dentist locations for easier decision-making, and additional insights into each dentist's practice philosophy and patient experience will be provided for a better

user experience.

My Contribution

During this 8-week project, my team would jot down our initial ideas, thought process, and designs separately before coming together to be able to hear everyone's opinion and compromise on what to do. I was the main facilitator of my group, As a group with little design experience, I was brought in to help facilitate and teach my colleagues the basics of Figma. What seemed to be at first a simple design project turned into a wonderful experiment in teaching, partnership, and learning how simplicity in design is key to agile development.

Research Process

In the span of two months, we went from conceptualizing to a working demo of the page. It was new to work with others and hear a designer's perspective rather than a user's feedback. As a result, there was many blocks we had with what direction to go towards. This lead to us sketching out designs on our own but coming back to choose which was the most efficient to collaborate on. My main focus was solving the issue within the time span we had.

Main Challenges from the Beginning of the Process
  • Coordination inside the team

  • Dealing with time constraints as new designers

Concept Sheets

To start, after having a meeting on what the goals of this project was, we created our own concept sheets to create the tone of this application. We all had similar ideas of wanting the platform to be similar to the original layout while adding new features to enhance the experience. This way, users would not feel overwhelmed from learning to navigate a new website. As the demographic is for older adults to seniors, we want to create an interface is informative and has contrast.

Design Development

WIREFRAMES

After discussing the concepts with the Delta Dental mentors, we made separate wireframes to express our own ideas. These low-fidelity wireframes are from my concepts and guidance with the mentors. We opted for keeping the colors simple for now and focusing on whether the information is legible. Instead of adding personalization with styling, I used a mix of font weight/sizes to establish a clear visual hierarchy.

My Results

  • User did not know what the ratings were for or from

  • Understood the idea of the map & how the number work

  • Enjoyed the idea of a "FAQ" page, but unsure of the information

  • Would like to go back to the previous page

  • Liked the idea of potential photos of the dentist

User Testing

I was given information on what to think a user would need to understand the purpose of my ideas. My next steps moving forward is to learn what Delta Dental's users are most interested in.

After meeting with my team, we all came to the conclusion that there was a ton of confusion in the wireframes.

  1. Feel Connected and Trusting

  2. Simplified Choosing

  3. Better Understanding of Dental Plan

Intended Outcomes

  1. Seamless Experience

  2. Connection

  3. Personalization
