Helping Women Travel Safe

This case study is to empower and encourage women to explore without feeling unsafe or restricted. Many women face unique challenges and concerns when traveling alone, such as safety concerns and finding female-friendly activities.

The Challenge

How might we create a solution that addresses the safety concerns of female travelers while also providing a user friendly platform for planning and booking travel experiences?

The Solution

An app designed for women travelers of all ages and backgrounds who seek a safe and empowering travel experience. This includes solo travelers, female-only groups, and those who prefer to connect with other women while exploring new destinations.

Timeline

Research Process

To understand the problem, I did competitive studies and researched data that already existed.

  • Females face health risks different from male travelers

    • gastrointestinal and respiratory infections

  • 50% of travelers  are women

  • Women lack detail of travel health knowledge

  • Women require special attention to safety and security compared to men travelers

Insights from User Research

Screening through Surveys

To start this project, I released a survey through social media platforms and received 12 responses.

Results

  • Every person I interviewed, had heard or experienced something bad in SF.

  • Only explore SF with Friends

  • Areas they would not feel safe: Tenderloin

Interviews

From the interviews, I was able to get more clarification on why at least 50% of my surveys feels “neutral” on how they feel about San Francisco. In some areas, they feel safer than they do elsewhere.

Conclusions & Reflections

There is no ONE-SIZE-FITS-ALL in UX.

I have come to a conclusion that a designer will not get it 100% right. My target audience is women travelers, but designing for a 50-year-old woman versus a 21-year-old woman will be different.

‍Be thoughtful and empathetic.

From doing my capstone project, I have learned how developing an app involves understanding the needs and preferences of the target audience and creating a user-friendly interface. As a designer, we should be able to gain new perspectives and ideas to have a better understanding to the problems we are trying to solve.

Building an app includes various stages.

During my capstone project, I had to do various stages - ideation, design development, testing-. These things helped me work on my problem-solving and critical thinking.
